Honoring MLK Day with 250 Mission
After the festive celebrations of December, let’s celebrate a holiday about giving back. The third Monday of January every year is Martin Luther King Jr Day. A United States federal holiday marking the birthday of MLK. This year, that date is January 15th, which is on MLK’s actual birthday.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. It is an annual opportunity to reflect on the ongoing struggle for civil rights, equality, and justice.
The holiday was first observed in 1986, after years of advocacy and activism by supporters of Dr. King’s legacy. MLK Day has since become a day to remember Dr. King’s leadership and dedication to achieving racial equality.
There is a variety of meaningful ways to celebrate that honor Dr. King’s legacy. Including attending commemorative events, engaging in community service, participating in educational activities, taking time to reflect on social justice, and spreading awareness. Find events and volunteer opportunities using The King Center website.
